Curchorem: Over five months after the brutal murder of a 50-year-old woman in her house in Bepquegal ward of Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) area, the Curchorem police succeeded in arresting the accused Shyam Devidas.
Housewife Sucorina Travasso was found murdered in her house at Bepquegal on July 6, 2018. Her sister Milagrina Travasso had lodged a complaint in this regard.
Speaking to media persons, DySP Uttam Raut Dessai informed that the accused from Karmanem in Dabhal village panchayat area was employed by the deceased to cut down trees around her house. But he had gone missing since the murder without completing the work. The daughter of the deceased had also suspected his involvement.
Desai further said that a lookout notice was issued for him. He further said, “On Monday at around 12.30 am, we received a message from Margao railway police station that a person looking similar to Shyam Devidas was detained at platform 4 of Margao railway station. Immediately, a team rushed to the Margao railway station and after identification took the accused into custody.”
Desai said that upon interrogation, the accused confessed to having assaulted Sucorina as she refused to pay him the money for the work done. On further interrogation, the accused informed that after committing the murder, he went to Panvel, Mumbai and stayed there for about 4 months and worked as a labourer and at night he would sleep at the railway station. Then he went to Mangalore but soon reached the nearby Hassan district. After staying there for about a month, he returned back to Margao and was resting at platform 4 at Margao railway station when he was nabbed by LIB staff Subhash.
Police have also recovered the koyta used by the accused to commit the murder.
Meanwhile, the accused was produced before a Quepem court which sent him to six-day police custody. [NT]
