57 KFD cases reported in Sattari this season

Valpoi: As many as 57 cases of KFD, also known monkey fever, were detected this season, while one person died of the fever, in Sattari taluka.

Since last four years there has been an outbreak of monkey fever in Sattari which took the life of some villagers in the first two years. The fever was first detected in 2015 in Pali village, where the disease took the life of a person. The next year, the disease took the lives of three persons in the taluka.

KFD season starts in November and lasts till May or till the start of rainy season.

According to Dr Gajanan Naik, Health Officer of Community Health Centre Valpoi, “This season they got less cases compared to last three years. As the health department conducted an extensive advocacy programme, vaccination drives and distributed tick repellent oil to the villagers who visit forests. When patients come to the hospital with fever, the detection of the disease was done fast due to in house unit of Manipal Centre for Virus research. The early detection helped doctors to treat patients.”

“Since its first detection in Karnataka in 1957, it was said by the experts that it has 5 to 10 percent mortality rate, but since last two year there is no mortality in Goa. We have maintained it to zero percent. This is because of early detection and good management by our doctors,” Dr Naik said.

“The reference to Goa Medical College was also less this season as the management done by our doctors was commendable. Daily monitoring of blood samples and maintaining hydration helped patients to recover fast. Unlike other viral diseases, we have seen that in KFD positive patients the platelet goes down very fast, and in recovery phase it increases.

The normal value of platelets should be 1.5 lakh to 4 lakh. If the platelet value of any positive patients goes less than 50,000 then we refer the patient to GMC,” Dr Naik added When the disease was first detected in April 2015, 30 persons tested positive for the fever with one death.

In the second season, from December 2015 to May 2016, 277 villagers were tested positive for KFD, three of whom died; from November 2016 to May 2017, 88 villagers were detected positive with one death. This season from November 2017 to May 2018, 57 tested positive, one of whom died. [H]
