Agriculture students participate in jackfruit workshop and other green initiatives

A two-day workshop on value addition in jackfruit through processing was held last month at the Don Bosco College of Agriculture (DBCA) at Sulcorna. This workshop coincided with the entrepreneurship development workshop at GCCI in Panjim.

Sunetra Talaulikar, Subject Matter Specialist-Home Science at KVK-North Goa, gave the students a hands-on experience in making pakodas, pickle, kheer and gulab jamun from jackfruit pulp and a beverage from jackfruit seeds. Unlike in other colleges, all the DBCA-Sulcorna students are familiar with cooking as they have keenly contested inter-group competitions for World Food Day since October 2016.

The final year students use these skills to cook their own food this semester during the three-month-long village stay for RAWEP (Rural Agriculture Work Experience Program), which is a part of the degree program.

Judging the jackfruit products was a whole lot tougher because of the very creative dishes made by the students on the campus the same day. Sneha Govekar, Demonstrator in Nutrition at FTC, Ela Farm, led the team of judges with the former Principal of Sharda Mandir, Eunice de Sa, and ZAO Mapusa, Rena Menezes, as members.

Asilda Vaz of TYBSc (Agri) bagged the first place for her Jacada or Jack Fruit Doce; Riya Metri picked the second prize for her Vegan Biryani with Jackfruit ‘meat’, while Jackfruit Shake made by Kavita Pujari of SY BSc (Agri) and Jackfruit Chilli made by Bhushan Sawant Desai of Final Year B Sc (Agri) were tied for the third prize.

Earlier in the day, the Fresh Jackfruit competition had Nandesh Gaonkar of TYBSc (Agri) at DBCA-Sulcorna winning the top slot for the best Jackfruit (No. 19), and the other two prizes were picked by the students of Don Bosco Farm High School, Sulcorna. The second prize was bagged by Amit Kullu (No.21) who had brought two huge Jackfruits and Rohit Devidas (No.3) picked the third prize.

The Jackfruit brought from the Sulcorna Salesian House & Farm by Bro. Joswin D’Souza missed the third spot by a whisker. The judging was done by Dattaprasad Desai, Sanjeev Mayekar and Satyavan Desai, all Agriculture Officers from the Directorate of Agriculture, Goa. The 3D rangoli of jackfruit was done by students Puja Phadte and Vijay Belgi, both of TYBSc(Agri).

At the recently held Ponnsachiem Fest last month at Socorro Church Grounds, Sneha Govekar had demonstrated how to make how to make jackfruit squash and jam at the venue. There will be another public demonstration at SFX School Complex, Siolim, Bardez, from 10 to 11:30 am on Sunday, August 19, 2018 on how to make beverage from Jackfruit seeds and gulab jamun and other products by Sunetra Talaulikar, Subject Matter Specialist-Home Science.
