Don Bosco Crafts Institute, Loutolim, Goa, India
The Don Bosco Crafts Institute, situated in Loutolim village in Salcette taluka of South Goa, is conducted by the Salesians of Don Bosco specifically for drop-out boys. The Institute is a training-cum-production vocational institute, which undertakes work in steel fabrication, wood technology and electric repairs. This is done to give the drop-outs professional experience in the competitive market.
This technical institute was started in 1993. It is a full-time non - formal technical institute catering to the needs of drop - out boys in Goa. Drop - out boys from Loutolim and even from distant villages benefit from this technical institute. Here, they are educated to human maturity and are taught to be self-reliant.
For the first batch, we had 12 boys and the number went on increasing each year. Today, we are proud to say that 99% of our past students are employed. At present, we have 30 boys undergoing training in various trades.
The institute is not funded nor aided by the govt. ,since the govt. does not have any clearly defined policy to assist any NGO which undertakes the education of these type of youth.
There is also a one-month part time intensive course in computer operations and wordprocessing for girls.
Our Future vision & Mission is to cater to the needs of the drop-out youth by providing functional vocational job-oriented courses of a high standard. In about a year we plan to teach metal art work, and plumbing. The construction plans for an appropriate workshop are on the anvil.
Admissions : For admissions, no academic qualifications are required. A boy should be 15 years of age and he should have the desire to work hard. Admission forms are available in the institute's office during working hours. In keeping with our mission we give preference to poor boys, and boys with difficult family conditions.
