Calangute Assn emerge champions

Mapusa: Host Calangute Association Sports Club drubbed St. Anthony’s SC Marna 4-0 to clinch the glittering Calangute Panchayat Cup, at Poriat ground, on Sunday.

Calangute Association dominated in the 70 minutes of play, where they shot into the lead in the first minute as Vichal Vaigankar gave final touches to Sanjay Vengurlekar’s cross from the right flank to give his side the lead.

On crossing over Calangute continued their onslaught with some excellent display in the midfield by Aiken Dias, Dominic Fernandes and Siddharth Simepuruskar that kept the strikers Namresh and Vichal Vaigankar busy upfront where they hammered in three more goals.

A fine cross by skipper Dominic Fernandes saw Namresh Kundikar guide the ball into the nets to make it 2-0.

Marna had just one attempt at the goal with Calangute keeper Selwyn D’Souza fumbling with his throw in which was intercepted by Balchandra Vernekar, where the ball travelled to Vaibhav Mayekar who failed to keep his shot inside the Calangute’s goal framework.

In the last ten minutes of the match Calangute scored twice, with Dominic Fernandes’ strike getting a deflection off a Siolim defender before entering the goal, while top scorer for Calangute Aiken Dias headed the ball into the nets off a cross from Runaal Shirodkar secured him the player-of-the-tournament award.

Calangute retained the winners glittering trophy and cash prize of Rs.50,000 while St. Anthony’s SC, Marna had to be content with the runners-up trophy and cash prize of Rs 40,000.
