Mapusa: Calangute Association registered an important 2-0 win over Guardian Angel Sports Club in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium, here, on Tuesday.
After a goalless first half, Calangute scored both the goals in the second half through Mohammed Shashad and Runal Shirodkar to give three precious points.
In a midfield controlled match, both the teams created sporadic chances with Calangute having the first decent chance but Diptesh’s feeble header from a cross by Akash did not cause much trouble to the Angels keeper.
Minutes later, Calangute keeper Savio Paes brought up a smart stop to prevent Micky Vaz’s header from a corner taken by Clinton in finding the net.
The second session was the same had the first with very few chances created by both teams.
However, Calangute found the much needed break though in the 62nd minute when Mohammed Shashad cleverly outfoxed two defenders and let go of a fierce grounder from inside the box which hit the Angels defender James Fernandes and the advancing keeper Gupta to give his side the lead.
Runal Shirodkar settled the match by finding the second goal in the 75th minute with a deft placement after being put through by Dominic’s defence splitting pass.
Meanwhile at SAG ground, Utorda, Andreis John scored in the 90th minute to net the match-winner for Salgaocar Football Club as they registered a thrilling 4-3 win over Velsao Sports and Cultural Club.
The newly promoted side took the lead in the 11th minute through Josley Moniz. Salgaocar FC struggled to settle in the game but finally managed to net the equaliser in the 30th minute through Samuel Costa. The goal changed the mood in the camp as Salgaocar FC played more aggressive football and took the lead in the 38th minute through Devendra Murgaonkar.
Post resumption, Velsao SCC were a transformed side as they showed more energy on the field and didn’t keep the ball at their feet for long.
Their fast paced game earned them the equalising goal in the 53rd minute through Bahham. Velsao stunned the crowd as Joseph Pereira gave them the lead in the 72nd minute and it looked like the Green Brigade were inching towards another surprise defeat.
But their young blood didn’t give up till the end as they netted the equalising goal with ten minutes to go through D Rebello. Finally Andries John scored the decided in the last minute of the regulation time.
In another match played at 3MTR ground, Corps of Signals eased past Bardez Football Club 3-1.
The only goal in the first half was scored by Liston M scored in the 41st minute to give the North Goa side a surprise lead.
Crossing over it was all Signals story as they scored two goals in the span of two minutes. Harshad Thube levelled terms at the hour mark and Pawan Thakur put them ahead in the very next minute.
Bardez FC tried to find the leveller but they couldn’t get past and in their bid to attack they conceded the third in the 81st minute when Vishnu Chhetri scored the team’s third. [H]
