Calangute panchayat officials inspect illegal structure, direct owner to demolish

Calangute: The Calangute Panchayat conducted a site inspection of an illegal structure being erected on the field by a resident in front of St Alex Church after taking cognizance of a post that went viral on social media.

The structure was erected taking advantage of the Ganesh festival during which the panchayat authorities were either immersed in celebrations or were holidaying.

Calangute Sarpanch Shawn Martins said that they had received a complaint from locals on Saturday after the matter was reportedly being circulated on the social media.

“The panchayat office was closed for two days for Ganesh Chaturthi and during this time the structure was erected. On Saturday, after receiving a complaint from the locals a sight inspection notice was sent to the owner of the field and also he was also asked to stop the work. On Monday we conducted a site inspection during which the owner failed to provide us with the required documents,” Martins said.

“We requested him to dismantle the erected structure and also informed the police to stop the work. We will follow the procedure under the Panchayat Raj Act with regards to illegal structures,” he added. [H]
