Canacona resident files PIL in HC, seeks relief from ‘illegal’ activities

Canacona: A Canacona resident has filed public interest litigation (PIL) in the High Court seeking relief from the alleged illegal activities in the construction of the bypass linking Char Rasta to Mashem. Once commissioned, the bypass will reduce the travelling distance from Canacona to Karwar by 10 kms.

On behalf of the aggrieved residents of the taluka, Pamela Rodrigues has named the Executive Engineer, Works Division XIV (NH), PWD, the Member Secretary Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority, the Captain of Ports, contractor of the bypass M/s Venkat Rao Infra Projects Pvt Ltd, the State of Goa, and the Deputy Collector & SDO of Canacona Taluka as respondents.

The petitioner has sought relief from the court over the ongoing “illegal” construction of a bridge across Maxem Creek, soil filling of the Galgibag River Estuary at Mashem along with other violations by the contractor of the bypass linking Char Rasta to Mashem and also the environmental and socio-economic destruction, which threatens the village due to the CRZ violations.

She has stated in the PIL that their complaints to the Chief Secretary of Goa, Governor of Goa and other government departments on the blatant illegalities regarding filling of the river and the reduction of the vertical clearance at Mashem bridge from original at 10mts to less than 5mts have not been responded to nor any action has been taken and with all available options exhausted they have knocked the doors of judiciary for relief from the illegalities committed on the bypass road on NH66.

The respondents have sought time to file reply before the next hearing on June 18. [H]
