Candolim locals express concern over activities of illegal touts

Candolim: Misuse of the new car parking area and law and order situation in Candolim were the main issues discussed at the village gram sabha on Sunday.

The villagers raised the issue of illegal touts going around offering help to tourists over availability of drugs, prostitutes, massage centres etc and sought action against such activities, besides nuisance of beggars.

In this regard, sarpanch Blaize Fernandes told the gram sabha that the DIG has been informed about such illegal activities and has also been requested to come and see for himself what was happening.

As regards the issue of new car parking lot, the sarpanch was asked if the panchayat had given NOC for movable carts as these have become a nuisance at the entrance of the beach. It was also pointed out that the developed space was being misused by tourists for cooking and drinking alcohol.

The sarpanch said that the property belongs to GTDC and the panchayat was not aware if the GTDC had given licence to operate movable carts there. Further, the sarpanch said that action would be taken against gaddas operating near the market.

The locals also raised the issue of hotels converting car parking areas into gardens and for running shops while cars were being parked on the roads.

They also asked the panchayat to act against dumping of debris and garbage on the roadside near the bridge linking Candolim to Nerul and demanded installation of CCTVs to curb the menace.

When a villager claimed that the gram sevak was not informing people, especially fishermen and farmers, about government schemes, the sarpanch said that the sevak would be asked to disseminate schemes-related information to the villagers.

The villagers also sought a traffic plan for the Christmas season, installation of speed breakers on Saipem slope, ward-wise meetings on the ODP. They also demanded a meeting with the electricity department official to discuss low-voltage problem in the village. [NT]
