Carmona’s new sarpanch assures gram sabha in Jan

Margao: Carmona and Chinchinim Deussua panchayat failed to convene the gram sabha in the month of October as mandated by the Panchayat Raj Act. In fact, this year, this is the second time that Carmona has not convened a gram sabha as the gram sabha in the month of July was also not held.

Newly elected Carmona Sarpanch Allwyn Jorge who was on leave in July assured that the gram sabha would be held in January 2019 as required and that though the panchayat body is serious about its responsibilities, it is handicapped by lack of full time secretary.

Since the new panchayat body was elected last year there have been six secretaries appointed to Carmona Panchayat and all of them have been given additional charge and nobody was appointed as fulltime secretary to the panchayat.

“When the secretary is given additional charge, he or she comes to the panchayat only on alternate days and very often for only half a day as they go to the Block Development Officer’s office at Margao for half day,” said Allwyn.

Bothered about the garbage collection in the village, the new Sarpanch engaged four labourers on Sunday to sort out the dry garbage collected from households and dumped in the panchayat property. “We are engaging a rickshaw to collect garbage from households every fortnight and I want to change it to weekly collection but I need help and support from the BDO and a full time secretary,” he said.
