Canacona: Cola panchayat at a meeting convened on Sunday to deliberate on the complaint filed by the villagers over the alleged nuisance created on the Nuvem beach by the traditional fishermen, unanimously decided to back the traditional fishermen as the villagers who complained decided not to attend the meeting over the differences over the location of the meeting.
The villagers residing close to the Nuvem beach in Cola village, irked over the conduct of fishing activities by the traditional fishermen from the area, had written a complaint to the Cola panchayat requesting it to put a stop to the nuisance created in their vicinity. The villagers had alleged disturbance of peace, pollution and haphazard parking on the beach by the fishermen who venture into the sea with their small boats in the area.
Cola sarpanch Purna Nayak speaking to Herald said that both the groups were called for a meeting in the panchayat hall on Sunday; while the fishermen attended the meeting, the villagers who had submitted the complaint boycotted it over their demand to conduct the meeting on the beach itself.
The meeting which was by chaired by Sarpanch Purna Nayak was also attended by deputy sarpanch Pandhari Prabhu Desai, panch Guru Velip. Ms Nayak said that after taking in to account all the points raised in the complaint, they decided to back the traditional fishermen and the panchayat would not entertain any complaint from the residents of Nuvem beach area as this is the second complaint in which they failed to remain present.
