During the past year, the Goan Charitable Organisation continued the good work it began in 1988 by providing a variety of beneficial services to the community at large. New immigrant families were helped with counselling, winter clothing, furniture and canned food items; those experiencing monetary difficulties were provided with temporary financial assistance; and other metropolitan charitable organizations were given linen, toys, food items, and donations to assist them in their work.
The successful September Serenade dance and the Christmas booth at the G.O.A. celebration of the feast of St. Francis Xavier formed part of our fund raising activities during the year. These, added to the generous donations from our (G.O.A.) members, enabled us to meet most of the requests for aid that were received by the Organisation.
Olga Madeira and her sub-committee of Eurema Colaco, Elma De Souza, Rolina D'Silva, Theresa Faleiro, Joan Menezes and Sylvie Tavares devoted much time and effort in carrying out the mandate of the Organisation and in enhancing its profile. The GCO owes these women a large debt of gratitude and a sincere vote of thanks.
