Comunidade convention adjourned pending polls

Panjim: The statutory convention of 223 comunidade organized on Sunday, after a gap of almost ten years, had to be adjourned pending elections of managing committees of several of these age-old bodies.

The Revenue Department had asked representatives of comunidades in the State, which are headed by three administrators under North, South and Central zone, to attend the meeting convened under Article 652 of the Code of Comunidade. Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte was present for the convention, the platform to discuss administrative and other matters to improve the functioning of these bodies.

During the convention, managing committees of certain communidade complaint of receiving meeting agenda at the last minute and it was also brought to the notice that elections are pending in several communidades. By February 3, managing committee of all the 223 comunidades has to be on board.

The convention resolved to adjourn the same for the next date, for which two-week long notice would be issued post February 3.

Meanwhile, Government has constituted five-member Comunidade Commission that includes President of Assagao Comunidade Francis Crasto, President of Guirim Comunidade Tulio De Souza, Special Attorney of Comunidade of Calapur Romano Gonsalves, President of Loutolim Comunidade Francisco Monteiro and Attorney of Mormugao Comunidade Fredrick Henriques.

Speaking to media persons, Khaunte said that as per Code of Comunidade, under Article 652, on the second Sunday of the year, after every five years, we have to hold the convention. “The process which was not followed last ten years, we have initiated it,” he said.

Minister said that the suggestions, resolutions passed in the convention would be placed before Government for examination and decision. [H]
