Cong Karnataka chief slams BJP for silence on casinos

Panjim: Congress on Monday slammed the BJP for being silent on shifting of offshore casinos. Congress alleged that BJP has betrayed the people on the assurance it had made during the 2012 Assembly campaign. Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) working president Dinesh Gundo Rao, speaking at a press conference, pointed to the government’s failures on critical issues and said, “It (BJP) had promised to remove the casino culture and shift the vessels out of River Mandovi. The present situation is that offshore casinos are still operating in the river. The previous election manifesto also assured to set right the mining issue but the industry was brought to a standstill. There were ways to set things right without hampering the industry.”
The major failure, the former Karnataka minister said was not implementing the unemployment and housing schemes. “The issue of unemployment allowance was forgotten. Another 2012 election promise was affordable houses to all, but many have been rendered homeless,” he said in the presence of GPCC chief spokesperson Sunil Kawthankar.Taking a dig at Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Rao said he has been ‘remote controlling’ the Goa Chief Minister’s Office despite holding an important responsibility at the Centre. “Repeated interference has affected the development of Goa…” he alleged adding, “Every revenue-generating industry in the State has been severely impacted.”Responding to a media query on the Mhadei water dispute between the two States, the KPCC chief said the matter should be amicably resolved without hurting each other or bypassing the law. “Goa and Karnataka share friendly relations. The two states should mutually solve the issue and Centre should play the role of an umpire,” he said. [H]
