Margao: The Iftar party held by Muslims from Rumdamoll this evening became an occasion for the Congress Party to show its strength as many of its MLAs and leaders were present sharing bonhomie with the Muslims as they broke their fast.
Goa Pradesh Congress Party President Girish Chodankar was present in time and was shortly joined by MLA Clafasio Dias. MLAs Wilfred D’Sa and Luizinho Faleiro arrived thereafter and were then joined by Leader of Opposition Babu Kavlekar amd MLA Tony Fernandes.
Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress President Pratima Coutinho was present from the beginning while MLA Dayanand Sopte arrived after the fast was broken and MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco came later. In fact, as Reginaldo walked in Clafasio left the party followed by Girish Chodankar who also had to go elsewhere.
Parish Priest of Holy Spirit Church Fr Avinash Rebello and Director of Don Bosco Institute at Fatorda Fr Kinley D’Cruz were also present for the party. In fact both the priests while extending Eid greetings to the Muslims said it was a good practice to get all religions together for a community meal like the Iftar party.
Fr Avinash said the student who ranked first in Holy Spirit school at SSC exams this year was a Muslim while Fr Kinley was seen meeting and talking to his students from the area. He said the month long fasting was a personal as well as a communal gesture that emphasizes charity.
Pointing out that in unity lies strength, Luizinho Faleiro said Iftar celebration that brings all people together was a vehicle to bring about unity through which there would emerge strength.
Babu Kavlekar and Digambar Kamat both said that Iftar parties were keeping alive secularism in the country and said they should thrive as such events bring all communities together. [H]
