Dr. José Colaço studied medicine at the University of Bombay and later specialized in Paediatrics with post-Graduate degrees from the University of the West Indies in Jamaica and the National University of Ireland.
He obtained post-graduate training at a number of hospitals in Jamaica, the UK, Ireland and The Bahamas. He presently serves as a senior paediatrician at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau and has a modest private practice.
He is the current President
of the Academy of Medical Sciences( Bahamas ) and Editor of the Bahamas
Medical Journal. Keenly interested in research he has published 71 original
research / review papers, 64 as first author. He
has presented papers at meetings of the European Society for Gastroenterology,
the British Paediatric Association, the Irish Paediatric Association, the
Medical Association of the Bahamas, The Academy of Medical Sciences( Bahamas)
and the Pan American Health Organization.
His major area of
interest is Asthma in Childhood. Several of his other publications
include studies of infant & childhood mortality, rheumatic heart
disease and childhood sexual abuse.
He has organised and chaired eight International Conferences held in Nassau under the auspices of the Medical Association of The Bahamas and the Academy of Medical Sciences( Bahamas ) and served as an advisor and consultant to the Pan American Health Organization.
Dr. Colaço and his wife Emma are permanent residents of The Bahamas and live in Nassau. They have three children Allan (25) a CPA, Noel(24) a computer engineer and Lynette(22) a graduate student.
