PORTICIO OF PALACE OF THE FORTRESS

PORTICO do PALACIO DA FORTALEZA

The Ruins of the Palace of the Fortress

On the left side of the Arch of Viceroys, on the way to the Church of S. Caetano. The former Muslim castle was rebuilt by Afonso de Albuquerque. The captians of theships used to live here. There are no vestiges of Palacio da Fortaleza except got the doorway monolithic pillars that have been placed on them.

A lone standing grey basalt doorway, raised on a plinth and reached by a flight of five steps, is all that remains of the once – Grand Islamic Palace of Adil Shah, ruler of Goa until the arrival of the Portuguese. Probably built by Sabaji, the ruler of Goa before the Muslim conquest of 1471.

The now ruined palace was occupied by Adil Shahi sultans of Bijapur who occupied Goa before the arrival of the Portuguese in 1510. It became the Palace of the Viceroys from 1554 to 1695. Sections of the palace still stood when the Governor decamped downriver to the swish suburb of Panelim in 1754, but these were eventually pulled down for use in the construction of Panjim.
