Mapusa: Dempo Sports Club registered a thumping 5-0 win over Panjim Footballers in the tenth round match of the Goa Professional League, organised by Goa Football Association, played at Duler Stadium, here on Sunday.
Dempo leapfrog Sporting Clube to second position with 20 points from ten matches, while Panjim Footballers remain at the bottom of the league table on 11th spot with 4 points and face a fight for relegation.
Dempo were leading 3-0 at the breather through Joaquim Abranches, Jaison Vaz and Jessel Carneiro while Chatur Naik and Desmon Pereira also got their names on the score sheet in the second half to complete the rout.
Needing a big win to have a better goal difference in the league, Dempo were off and running and in the 12th minute Jessel Carneiro`s well connected shot from Naveen Mendes cross was smartly stopped by U-20 keeper Massom Ali but from the rebound Jaison Vaz saw his placement go over the crosspiece.
Minutes later, Dempo`s Floyd Periera had the same fate when his placement from Jessel cross missed the post by inches.
Dempo finally got the goal in the 27th minute when a measured cross by Jaison Vaz found Joaquim Abranches who slotted the ball into the goal but in the process Joaquim collided with keeper Massom Ali and both laid injured for a couple of minutes on the field.
Jaison Vaz then made it 2-0 for Dempo with a smart finish which had no answer to the keeper with Jessel Carneiro being the provider from the left side.
Dempo`s third goal from the penalty spot was a minute before interval which was calmly dispatched by Jessel Carneiro after Joaquim Abranches goal bound shot hit Panjim Footballers Clifton’s arm prompting referee Mario Periera to point to the penalty spot.
On resumption of second half, Dempo did not sit back with a three goal cushion but kept raiding their rival goal and made it 4-0 when substitute Chatur Naik provided finishing touches to a cross by Kirtikesh. Earlier Chatur Naik’s strike had kissed the upright.
Dempo rounded up the score sheet to 5-0 in the 92nd minute when Desmon Periera controlling a pass on the right side busted inside the goal area and struck a firm right footer which sneaked into the nets despite a desperate attempt from substitute keeper Sherwin. [H]
