Dhatre villagers irked with snapping of power cables

Sanguem: The villagers residing in Dhatre ward of Bhati village panchayat in Sanguem taluka are literally sore over the frequent snapping of power cables for the last three months. The villagers residing at Dhatre are also irked over the failure of the successive governments in providing them a motorable access.

Since the time people started staying in Dhatre about a century ago, the life of the villagers residing in this remote hamlet has not changed. The village of Dhatre is located in the deep forest area which is accessible by a kutcha road either from Barazan or Valshem ward of Bhati village panchayat.

Ironically, the use of the kutcha road is fine during day time. However, once the sun sets, the villagers are scared to venture out of their houses due to the movement of wild animals.

A villager Eknath Rama Gaonkar said that during the time of illness and medical emergency, the villagers are made to face extreme hardships as there exists no transport facility in the village. “The scenario is worst once the sun sets,” claimed Gaonkar.

Since the past three months there has been acute power supply problem in the village. Frequent snapping of electricity cables have made the villagers spend sleepless nights. “Incidentally though the department has been making attempts to restore the power supply at the earliest, the passing of cables over the trees leads to frequent snapping of cables,” Sarpanch of Bhati Village Panchayat Uday Naik told Herald.

Naik also said that the PWD had begun constructing a road to the village and for that purpose even rubble was dumped alongside the kutcha road. However, on account of strict opposition by the Forest Department, the PWD could not go ahead with the road construction work.

Dhatre ward which comprises around six houses also lacks regular drinking water supply facility. In the absence of regular drinking water supply, the villagers are relying on nearby streams and springs to get water for drinking and domestic purposes, claimed Gaonkar. [H]
