Panjim: The long-awaited detention centre for overstaying foreign visitors to Goa is finally over as the State government on Thursday issued an order to lodge the illegal immigrants till their deportation at the old Mapusa judicial lock-up.
The order by under secretary (Home) Neetal Amonkar states, “The government of Goa hereby requires the illegal immigrants/foreign nationals awaiting deportation to reside in the Detention Centre at old judicial lock-up at Mapusa next to the Mapusa police station.”
Herald had reported on January 16 that the new detention centre is complete and it would start by January 26. “Most of the work is complete and once the recruitment is done we plan to start by January 26. We will keep the overstaying tourists in the detention centre and give access to their respective embassies but will not leave them till they bring in valid documents,” FRRO SP Bosco George had told Herald.
Reacting to the development, DGP Muktesh Chander said it would help the police deal with criminal elements from foreign countries. “Finally, Goa government has issued an order regarding detention centre for lodging foreigners staying illegally in Goa without any travel documents till their deportation. Goa Police had been requesting and pursuing it for a long time. It would help us deal with criminal elements from foreign countries who were exploiting the fact that there was no detention centre here,” he said.
The requirement of a detention facility was felt the most after a group of Nigerians created a ruckus on Porvorim highway in October 2013 to protest the death of one of their countrymen. [H]
