Panjim: The Panjim Police on Sunday registered an FIR against activist Claude Alvares and Rahul Basu for locking the Department of Mines and Geology office and for interrupting government work.The police have said that complaint was registered by Mines and Geology Department official Yashwant against activist Claude Alvares and Rahul Basu.
According to the Panjim police, the FIR was registered for damage to public property, wrong confinement and obstruction to public servant while on duty.Goa Foundation along with NGOs on Saturday had locked the door of the Mines dept and had handed over the keys to Panjim PS in-charge Siddhant Shirodkar.GF led by Claude Alvares, on Saturday had alleged that the department had not acted responsibly to deal with the mining scam and demanded that it be closed permanently.
“We have lost complete faith in the Mines Dept. The ore was handed over to the govt by the court but the govt said we don’t want it, hand it over to the mining companies. What is the use of such a defunct department?” the foundation had questioned.
The NGO had also reiterated its demand for setting up a Mineral Development Foundation, while advising the government not to opt for auctioning of leases.
Meanwhile, the NGO had also alleged that the department had helped mining firms to illegally take away iron ore despite the Supreme Court order, of February 7. [H]
