Flyover segment crashes down in transit at Verna

Vasco: A large concrete segment of the under construction flyover at Cortalim came down crashing at Verna while being transported to the work site.

The incident occurred a little distance away from Birla Junction when the segment was being transported to the work site near Cortalim.

Several top segments of the flyover which are being constructed at Verna opposite the industrial estate are taken to the Cortalim stretch of the flyover for installation. One of such segments crashed on to the road divider at the Verna main road at 7.15 am on Wednesday.

“The span weighing 70 thousand kgs (70 tonnes) was being transported on a trolley by a puller truck. The incident occurred when the hydraulics of the trucks failed to support the weight bending the span on its side. The trolley too gave way soon and the truck along with the trolley and span fell on its side,” Verna Police Inspector Ninad Deulkar said.

Incidentally, the span fell right on to the center of the road and it did not completely halt the traffic. However, traffic did get affected as the vehicles increased and the police stepped in to manage the flow.

The project authorities inspected the incident site. They have decided to get the crane on to the road late night and move the span away when the traffic on road is least. [H]
