Panjim: With constant traffic jams between Goa Velha and Verna, Director of General of Police (DGP) has directed the traffic police as well as the agency constructing the new bridge to consider the pressure point and pressure time while carrying out the works.
DGP Pranab Nanda chaired a review meeting of all senior officials including DIG Parmaditya, SP Traffic Dinraj Govekar and Traffic PIs along with representatives of Dilip Buildcon Limited, the company constructing the new Zuari Bridge as well as the extended flyovers on both sides.
DIG Parmaditya informed that complete situation was reviewed and the bottlenecks were reviewed. “We have realised that with new diversion of road at Cortalim junction, there is a bottle neck just before the bridge. There is constant flow of traffic from both the sides at the same time there is traffic flow from Cortalim to Ponda which has to move towards Loutolim and that is the point of concern”, he stated.
He said due to limited options for traffic diversion, the police have limitations and people’s support and discipline is a must. He said, “We have a dedicated round-the-clock towing truck in case any vehicle breaks down or accident, but even for the truck to reach the spot becomes difficult as impatience looms large in the situation leading o further congestion.”
DIG informed that as a further means of streamlining the traffic flow, the DGP has directed to increase presence of police personnel as well as install bollards and dividers to ensure that motorists do not break lane rules.
Responding to coordination with the PWD, he said, “We have asked the SP Traffic to liaison with the PWD and as a precaution to ensure that the hill cutting along the road is not at a right angle so that any possibility of a landslide is avoided which would lead to major traffic problem.”
Parmaditya said the construction company has been requested to expedite the civil work of the existing access roads at the earliest and try to maximise the works during the nights.
“We have asked them to conduct a road engineering review and accordingly prepare decongestion plans. At the same time we appeal the motorists to maintain lane discipline and follow traffic rules while travelling on the route”, he stated. [H]
