Nagoa-Verna: FC Goa went down fighting to Minerva Punjab FC by a solitary goal in the India Youth league Elite match organised by AIFF, at Nagoa-Verna ground, on Wednesday.
With this win, Minerva moved into the final.
Makan Winkle Chothe opened the account for Minerva in the 14th minute after a defensive error made by FC Goa.
It was Chothe who foxed the FC Goa defence lines with a quick counter attack as he placed the ball into FC Goa net.
Minutes later, FC Goa striker Joybert Almeida, Meuton Fernandes and captain and defender Lesly Rebello tried their level best to score on several occasions but the well-knit defence line of Minerva guarded the fort and prevented FC Goa strikers from scoring any goals.
Later in the 46th minute, FC Goa striker Joybert Almeida rose high to head in a ball sent by Asfin Pinto but the latter’s header hit the Minerva side netting.
FC Goa had the best opportunity to level terms in the 74th minute but a free-kick taken by Brison Deuben Fernandes was well blocked by the Minerva defence.
In the second half, it was FC Goa who created chances to score but the different layers of defence set up by Minerva prevented FC Goa strikers from scoring.
In another match FC Pune City blanked Aizawl FC 2-0.
Nikhil Prabhu and Akhil Rawat of FC Pune City recorded their names on the score-sheet to move in the final and lock horns with Minerva Punjab FC on February 8. [H]
