Panaji: Goa entered the semifinals of the Santosh Trophy with a well crafted 2-1 win over Odisha in their penultimate Group A clash, according to information from All India Football Federation (AIFF) in Ludhaiana on Sunday.
Needing a win to make it to the semifinals, Goa scored two goals in the first half and some good defending by goalkeeper Tyson Caiado blunted Odisha’s hopes of making a comeback. Both the goals for Goa were scored by their defenders Jessel Carneiro and Sarineo Fernandes.
Goa, as per reports from Ludhiana, started aggressively and took the lead through captain Jessel Carneiro when he was put through by Kritikesh Gadekar, Jessel chipped the ball over the onrushing Odisha goalkeeper to score the first goal of the evening.
Odisha played hard for an equaliser and came close to restoring parity but their efforts were denied by Goa goalkeeper Tyson Caiado who made a brilliant save in a one-to- one situation.
Playing their first game in the evening, Goa appeared determined to put their opponents’ hopes of staging a comeback to rest by breaking the Odisha defence through the flanks. In one such move, Chaitan Komrapant let go a shot that was punched by the Odisha goalkeeper to land at the feet of Sarineo Fernandes who tapped in for the second goal of the evening.
Goa led by two goals during the lemon break.
Odisha began strongly in the second half and reduced the margin when the second session was around nine minutes old. The goal helped Odisha play with extra steam and they were awarded a penalty, which their striker blasted over to the relief of the Goan players.
Goa and Services qualify for the semifinals from Group A. Both teams had shared two goals in the opener of Group A. [NT]
