Calangute-Baga road closure irks locals
Closure of Calangute-Baga road for the people, especially the tourists, has inconvenienced the locals as they claim that they are losing on regular business for want of tourists.
According to the locals, the matter has been worsened with the commencement of road widening works, forcing closure of business establishments for days together.
“The business was just picking up with the start of the new tourist season, but road widening works have left us high and dry,” said an aggrieved local.
“We were trying to make up for the losses suffered during the previous year and earlier this year, but the situation has now forced us to stop activities in our establishments due to dust pollution and road widening works. The timing of the road widening is absolutely wrong and it should have been done much earlier,” added the local.
Added another local, “We locals have been stopped from encroaching on the roads, but what about the builders and big fish who have been allowed to encroach on roads. A builder has literally come on the road at Kobravaddo, Calangute, but no action has been initiated against the builder. There is water logging in the area inconveniencing the public but the structure is not touched.”
When contacted, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said, “If anyone has not abided by the rules and regulations and has encroached on the road the person will be taken to task as per the law.”
“I will ask the Deputy Collector and TCP to initiate action against the erring builder. Nobody is above the law and it applies to all,” added Lobo. [H]
