Goan FC cement their position at the top

Navelim: Goan FC continued their dominance in the Goa Professional League at the top of the Goa Pro League following their 3-0 win over Guardian Angel Sports Club, at Rosary ground, Navelim, on Tuesday.

Goan FC are unbeaten in the league and have registered seven wins and two draws, taking their points tally to 23 to remain at the top. Meanwhile, Guardian Angel are on 10 points from eight matches.

Aaren D’Silva, Liston Colaco and Imran Khan scripted their names on the scoresheet for the young Gaurs to hand them three vital points.

“We could have done better. The boys kept pushing till the end and we got the three goals. The boys played a good football and should have done better in the first half,” said Goan FC Technical Director Derrick Pereira on the team’s performance after Goan FC were held goalless till the 78th minute before they slammed three goals in the final 12 minutes of the game.

“Still long way to go but I must say that the players are working very hard. They are combining well since they have been together from last year,” added Derrick.

Neither side were able to break the deadlock in the first half, despite both the teams having their chances. Guardian Angel’s Senilo had a great chance to score but he shot straight at the keeper at the other end Guardian Angel keeper Ozen Silva did enough to frustrate the opposition strike force with couple of saves to deny Liston and co.

Crossing over, Guadian Angel SC players ran out of steam and Goan FC almost took the lead when Meldon nodded in a cross from Liston but his goal was denied by the referee for the initial foul in the box by the Goan FC player.

Minutes later, it was Goan FC Savior Gama who guided the ball at the back of the net but the Kapil Hoble had crossed the side line before crossing in the ball to Gama.

After much probing, Goan FC took the lead in the 78th minute when Liston played a cross from the right which was headed in by Aaren D’Silva.

The striker dived forward to beat his man, to give Goan FC their much deserved lead.

Goan FC soon doubled the lead in the 85th minute Aaren started the move and played a through pass to Kingslee Fernandes, who covered some distance on the left flank before he played a cut-back pass to Liston Colaco, who curled the shot in the bottom left corner, which caught Guardian Angel keeper Ozen Silva on the wrong foot.

Goan FC would have scored their third but Ozen pulled of stunning save to deny Savior Game late in the game. Savior Gama should have got his name on the scoresheet but he missed an open sitter in the first half when Liston’s goal bound shot was pushed into his way by Ozen Silva. Gama headed wide with only keeper at his mercy.

Imran Khan netted the third in the 90+ 4 minutes thanks to Liston Colaco who brilliantly dribbled past Guardian Angel before laying a perfect pass to Imran, who made no mistake to make it 3-0. [H]
