The Gift of the Cross
When pushed to the wall
with no escape possible, people turn to God. Goans did that when the place
was caught in the grip of a severe drought. The parish priest thundered
from the pulpit asking his flock to repent. He asked them, who will offer
their first-born as a gift to the cross.
Dona Rosa
Jacques, who was pregnant, decided that she would. And the day she gave
birth to an angelic child, Mario, the heavens sparked above and rain came
pouring down. Mario's birth was a
sign of good things to come.
The
characters in the novel fit typically into the various moulds that trudged
along the mud-roads once. They are very much like the cameos in the local
folk art known as 'zagor'. Mario Bab, the messianic child of the village,
his mother Ocobae, the village midwife--Concentin, the eccentric JozinBab,
the feudarl landlords of rivall villages--Senhor Tolentino and Senhor
Baltazar Afonso, Regedor Flamengo, Dr Bab Maurice, the devout Mario's
godmother Neurita Figueredo and the village tale carrier nicknamed "O
Heraldo"…there is a virtually unending list of locals of every interesting
sort peopling Lino Leitao's utterly Goan novel "The Gift of the Holy
Cross".
The
narrative takes one back to the village life of the colonial rule when the
very thought of freedom blew the tops of red-faced 'pakle'. Mario grew up
and happened to hear the speeches of the likes of the late Manohar Lohia,
of the Quit Goa Movement, Tristao de Cunha and Bertha Menezes de Braganza
and Evagrio Jcome, whose nationalistic fervour touched him the most. Goa
moved ahead, earned the long-yearned freedom and witnessed the rise of
leaders like Dayanand Bandodkar, Dr Jack de Sequeira, Dayanand Bandodkar
and the like. The author takes this all in his stride.
While
fictionalising events to suit the narrative, Leitao embellishes it with
the perfect Goan idiom and except for the spelling of the Konkani words,
comes out tops in everything that he says.
He has
portrayed period Goa like very few or probably none has done so far. And
the fact that he does it from his childhood memory without much access to
living in Goa proper, is truly magnificent. He is fortunate to have been
touched by the transformation Goa and Goans have undergone over the years
if not in anything at least in the usage of terms and endearing nicknames
and pet names.
As the
novel progresses we witness Mario going around clad in casti with a
pejecho poddgo in his hand, a vertiable Goan sanyasi, spreading the
message of love among the villagers. But his message falls on deaf years
because by this time materialism has taken over all the good traits that
the people had inherited from their forefathers. The drought returns at
the end and it symbolises a different sort of malaise than the one which
had afflicted Goa prior to Mario's birth. A new species of Goan has
emerged…
Well you
have to read the novel to which we cannot do justice in a few words here.
"The Gift of the Holy Cross" opens the floodgates of memories, nostalgia.
You won't feel like keeping it down until you come to the very end of the
narrative. Perhaps, even a couple of pearls will creep down your cheeks in
the process. You will read sections
like
"…As Rosa
held the child in her arms, Modon-maim traced the sign of the cross with
one of the chillies on his forehead, lips, chest and on many parts of his
body. Taking salt and rice in her hand she repeated the same process, and
then, taking all these ingredients together in her hands, she circled them
above the baby's head three times, saying the Credo and commanding evil
spirits to depart. To complete the ritual, she put the ingredients into a
hollow tile containing burning charcoal and soon the place was filled with
a pungent smell and the noise of the exploding salt. Modon-maim spat into
it three times, 'Hak thu! Hak thu! Hak thu!' Finally, she walked
out of the house with the tile and dropped it into a gutter, far enough
away…"
