ART GALLERY

Art Blossoms

"The artists in Goa never had it so good earlier" says Professor Appu Kulkarni, while we met at one of the several art exhibitions being held in Goa these days.

We talked about the days when the Art Forum, an artists' collective, had to struggle to put up a decent exhibition either at the Menezes Braganza Art Gallery or at the Kala Academy. But over the years things have changed tremendously, with more galleries being added to the regular two in Panjim.

In fact, one can even say that the scene has shifted from the Panjim and Margao to coastal Calangute. Ian, the Flying Dutchman, helped do it several years ago. Then came in Rudolph with his Art Chamber: Galeria de Bellas Artes at Gauravaddo. Today we also have Casa de Goa at Baga, promoting promising artists.

Having exhibited in Goa, artists like Alexyz and Rajan Fulari have shifted their focus to the other cities in the country. Alexyz is in Bombay with his popular "Famous Faces" and "Oh to be in Goa". Rajan Fulari has just returned from Delhi after exhibiting is works at the Triveni Art Gallery.

Verodina Ferrao and her husband Francis D'Souza had one of the most wonderful combination of paintings and sculptures at the Kala Academy recently. Sculptures and Paintints

Adam Sapiro and Robert Gessink had one of the longest exhibitions (from Jan 3 to 31) at the Art Chamber: Galeria de Bellas Artes in Calangute.
