SONG OF GOA: Mandos of
Yearning

Pp.234 (2000) HB Rs.450 Authors: Jose Pereira & Micael Martins ISBN-81-7305-166-6
Leave it to Dr Jose Pereira, an Indologist, Sanscrit scholar
and educationst, to detail the intricacies of anything
Goan--architecture, language, music and culture. His studious mind,
analytical thought process and abiding love for his motherland
combine to produce a learned result for those yearning to learn more
about their ethnic heritage. When Pereira's pen combines with that
of profilic composer and researcher of classical musical forms like
maestro Micael Martins, the reading pleasure naturally attains heady
proportions.
"Song of Goa: Mandos of Yearning", written by
Pereira and Martins, is a classic thesis based on Goa's traditional
Mando, a dance song typically consisting of quatrains, frequently
having appended choruses, set in six-four time.
The erudite authors go about providing convincing details to
confirm that the Mando figures among the 34 identifiable types of
song, which grew up and prevailed on India's western coast. They
relate how the Mando originated in the 1830s, maturing into a richer
form around 1870 to 1950.
They laud Goans for initiating the westernization of Indian
music as well as pioneering in Indian ethnomusicology. They go into
a fairly detailed description of each of the charasterics of the
Mando's poetry, music and dance aspects. They list the major
composers and their magical creations, which were experienced at
important celebrations in the aristocratic mansions of Goan Brahmins
and Chardos.
We learn from their narrative that "lake-studded"
Curtorim and densely green Loutolim were the birthplaces of Mando,
that Benaulim and other coastal villages of Salcette also
participated in the emergence of the Mando, and that the southern
strain is more leisurely and stately compared to the choppy
compositions of Bardez.
The important book, coming as it does at a time when the
majority of Goans are shedding their ethnic heritage in favour of
superficial western improvisations, will go a long way to lend Mando
the credentials it badly needs today.
Moreover, besides discussing music and providing a rich
anthology of various Goan Mande with detailed music notations, the
authors provide significant sidelights about Goan society and its
history and musical traditions down the centuries. It hails from the
pens of persons who have studied every nuance of Goan music and
experienced its innate thrill.
