Yli-Mayry's
Lovely Paintings
ON a warm evening
early this month, it was sparkling fire works once again announcing
an arresting array of paintings done by Soile Yli-Mayry of Finland,
at the Art Chamber of Galeria de Belas Artes in Calangute.
Rudolf Kammermeier, the gallery owner, stood
at the steps of the lovely, red laterite gallery, introducing slim
Soile Yli-Mayry, to the select gathering of artists and art lovers,
who were present at the inauguration. Yli-Mayry has been painting
assiduously for nearly two decades now, using a palette knife to
paint. She revels in expressionism and primitive art. It could he
a thin and even coat, or thick lines scraped into the painted area
to achieve a 3-D effect. Yli-Maygry’s has been smitten with humanity
and people’s alienation from nature in the urban world, and this
goes into inspiring here while painting.
Since graduating from the Arts Academy
in Stuttgart in Germany (1972-75), she has held nearly 180 solo
exhibitions in Japan, China, India, the United States and several
European countries.
Though painting has been Yli-Mayry
first love, she has also been pursuing political science. She took
her Licentiate’s degree in Political Science at the University of
Helsinki. Sociology of art formed the soul of her licentiate’s dissertation.
Burning Door,
Sand Fire, Dream Stone, Asphalt Heart, Heart Smoke, Moon Stone,
Asphalt Light, etc. figure among her beautiful oil paintings.
A face or more suddenly surface among the varied lines. For once,
we get away from the mournful dull and dark shades and behold a
series of wonderful paintings in bright colours, with Yli-Mayry’s
painting knife giving each the sharp edge, not merely visually but
even when it comes to attracting the finicky art buyer.
The exhibition will remain open
till November 30, 2000.
