A Preview

Convention 2000 logoWORLD Wide Goans is a loose-knit organisation of Goans around the world aimed at promoting inter-action and better understanding between Goans at home and abroad, for the betterment of their homeland.

WWG's main activity has been to organise an Annual International Goan Convention held on the last Saturday of the year during the Christmas/New Year Season in Panjim. It is a one-day event attended by delegates from Goa and abroad and addressed by prominent personalities in various fields. Problems of interest to Goans are discussed, decisions taken and resolutions adopted.

Convenor, Chief Guest, Chief MinisterThe first convention was held in December 1999 and the second on 27th December 2000 at the Institute Menezes Braganca, which was attended by over 500 delegates. One of the main demands, raised by Goans from abroad at this convention, was for setting up an N.R.I. Cell in Goa, on the lines of existing cells in other States, and a resolution was adopted to this effect. The Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, who was a Guest of Honour at the convention, agreed to give favourable consideration to the demand. It is gratifying to note that Mr Parrikar has since announced publicly the setting up of such an N.R.I. Cell under the Home Department.

This year the third Convention will he held on Saturday, 29th December 2001 at the Kala Academy, Panjim, from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. The theme chosen is "Goan Cultural Heritage" and papers will be presented on this theme. There will be an Art Exhibition in the Art Gallery of the Kala Academy during the convention. The afternoon session will be devoted to discussions on various problems faced by Goans of the diaspora.

Mr Pratapsing Rane, as Chairman of the Kala Academy, has been invited to preside. Among other honoured guests expected are Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, eminent architect Charles Correa, eminent writer and poet Dr Manohar Rai Sardessai. The convention will also be addressed by Mr George Menezes, Mr Mathany Saldanha and other speakers.

Two books "Churches of Goa" by Dr Jose Pereira published by Oxford University Press and "India & Portugal" edited by Dr Jose Pereira and published by Marg Publications, are to be released at the Convention.

The entrance to the Convention is free and it is open to all Goans and those interested in Goa.
