DINING OUT

THE VASCO INN
Port-town's prime rendezvous
By Daniel F de Souza

LOCATED away from the hustle and bustle of the bustling port-town, yet within walking distance from the city centre, The Vasco Inn, an air-conditioned restaurant and bar, set up by Joaquim Rodrigues, has overnight become Vasco's choice haunt for authentic Goan cuisine.

The soft-spoken proprietor, Joaquim Rodrigues says, "We aim to cater to the taste buds of the lovers of authentic Goan food but also make sure to give the discerning customer a wide choice of other cuisine too, all under one roof." The Vasco Inn's multi-cuisine does just that.

The restaurant's Goan spread features Chicken Cafreal and Chicken Vindhalo prominently on the menu card, which lists prices which don't pinch your pocket. The rates are reasonably low in comparison to its excellent service.

To those with a penchant for North Indian cuisine, Chef Girbir Singh, specially flown in for this purpose, concocts a wide variety of delightful dishes. Of course, Murgh Musallam, a whole spring chicken with minced meat, cooked in herbs and eggs, and topped with a rich gravy, remains the relishing favourite. There's no dearth of Chinese and continental delicacies.

The proprietor is rightly proud to pronounce that his establishment is the sole restaurant this side of the Zuari, serving hot Roomali Rotis, which diners don't normally find at the other restaurants even though they may excel in North Indian cuisine. Joaquim says that the Roomali Roties require a special art and expertise when it comes to frying. The Navratan Kurma and Veg Kaddai rule the vegetarian section.

When in Goa, seafood cannot be anything but the choicest and the freshest. The Vasco Inn stocks the season's choice catch, allowing the choosy diner to opt for the sea food of his/her choice from the wide range--King-fish to Modso to Pomfret Recheado.

The Vasco Inn's seating capacity extends to 50 plus guests, with a special section for families and those preferring privacy while dining. Since its inception the eatery has been attracting a vast and steady clientele, thereby making The Vasco Inn the rendezvous for the young and not so old Vascoites. Joaquim says, "Give your spouse a break from the rigours of cooking, give The Vasco Inn a try in the new year."

Friendly, personalised and prompt service makes the place, merely 1 km from Goa's golden gateway--the Mormugao Harbour--and 3.5 km from the Dabolim airport, worthy of a visit when in town.
