Mando Musings
TO
mark the occasion of the release of "Sundor Goem", in audio cassette
and CD forms, Kandollechim Kirnam released two lovely, small books
on the original mando, dekhni and other folksongs rendered by the
cultural ensemble over the years. They have bagged several first
prizes for lyrics, music and performance with the help of this
variety of music and hence it was quite natural that they would
record it in print for posterity.
Milestones in the Realm of Mando
The small book
dwells on the birth and the resounding success story of Kandollechim
Kirnam over the years. It has not only emerged as the premier
performing group in the rarefied sphere of song and drama in Goa but
has also helped greatly to keep alive Konkani folkmusic while Goans
overall have been increasingly tying themselves to the apron-strings
of westernised music.
The
book takes off with the different, informative aspects of the
performing group. Irene Cardozo talks about Kandolkar Francis
Britto, who happened to be the life and soul of the group. Lionel
Fernandes pays a rich tribute to the late Johnson, leader of Johnson
and His Holly Boys. Johnson was responsible for the delectable
musical score with which the group excelled at most of the Mando
competitions and song festivals in the State. The concluding section
deals with the lyrics of "Sundor Goem"
Mando: Goemchem
Lok-Git
This books
begins with Tomazinho Cardozo's tribute to maestro Johnson in
Konkani, and then goes on with the lyrics of a number of mande,
dulpod, dekhni and other folk songs along with their musical score.
Quite a lot of these admirable songs have been committed to tape and
CD over the years.
