A parish can hardly afford a new church nowadays. But still there are some small parish churches who require more space to accommodate the congregation because these churches were chapels originally. Here is such a church being renovated, remodelled and extended to make room for the entire congregation. We came across it last month in Ponda.

ILLUSTRIOUS GOANS
Waman Raghunath Varde Walaulikar

IN June, Goa remembered an illustrious son of the soil. He was none other than Waman Raghunath Varde Walaulikar. Born on June 23, 1877, in Bicholim, and popularly known as Shenoi Goembab, Walaulikar was a staunch Konkani protagonist from 1926 onwards.

Though today Goans have been split between the Roman and Devanagri scripts, Goembab penned 22 Konkani books in the Devanagri script and seven in the Roman script. His writings have proved a valuable contribution in almost all forms of Konkani literature. His works in history, linguistics and philosophy are classics and are recognised by renowned scholars in the respective fields.

Goembab always strove to stress that Konkani was an independent language, possessing its own importance in all walks of life. He also felt that education should be imparted in the mother-tongue as it is the ideal source for the development of the people. He argued that Konkani too possesses all the capabilities to play this important role.

Goembab has been justifiably called the father of modern Konkani literature. Mangalore's "Mand Sobhann" honoured him with the title of "Konkani Person of the Millennium" or yug purush, in recognition of his unique contribution to he language, for enriching its literature and for having identified himself fully with the Konkani identity throughout his exemplary life.

The award was presented posthumously and was handed over to the kin of the great poet by Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza on April 23, 2000, at Padua High School Grounds in Mangalore. The selection panel comprised of eminent Konkani activists and scholars GMB Rodrigues, Dr Tanaji Halarnkar, Felicio Cardozo, Prof Edward Noronha, Basti Vaman Shenoi, Alexander D'Souza and Eric Ozorio.

Goembab expired in Mumbai on April 9, 1946.
