Aires RodriguesAlong with all his wellwishers, we wish AIRES RODRIGUES all the success in his career as an advocate. After being away from the college as a student as well as a student leader for such a prolonged period, Aires managed to secure the Third rank in the Finals of the Goa University Law Examination. JULIO RIBEIRO, the former super cop, said that no police force can become successful without the support and co-operation of the public. While speaking at the Kala Academy on the topic "Fulfilling Peoples's expectations, bureaucracy and Police", on June 13, the former Indian Ambassador to Romania said that rude behaviour and corruption are the frequent complaints against the police. Ribeiro finds that Goa has already joined the mainstream and problems plaguing the other states are here too. He said that he would not want to be cop again given the prevailing situation.
Ashley RodriguesASHLEY RODRIGUES, a Mumbai-based computer project consultant, is also an expert at 3-D animation, trained in Holywood and Belgium. He has been managing and setting up studios and dotcoms by the dozens. Just last May, Ashley executed a record number of 206 websites, mostly for Hong Kong based companies. He has shot a number of ad films for major multinationals. Born in Mumbai and studied in Mt Abu, Ashley had grandparents in Divar and Aldona.
SRINIVAS V DEMPO, the Chairman of the Dempo group of Companies, was unanimously elected as the President of the Goa Cancer Society at the annual general body meeting held at the Manipal-Goa General Hospital Conference hall at Dona Paula on June 19. A young information technology professional-NITIN KUNCOLIENKAR-took over, from mining magnate Dattaraj Salgaocar, as the new president of the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry on June 29. Kuncolienkar (32) is the general manager, in Goa, of IT hardware giant D-Link. DATTARAJ V SALGAOCAR, managing director of V M Salgaocar, Goa, has been appointed as a member of the western area local board of the Reserve Bank of India, for a four-year term. Salgaocar is the first Goan to be appointed on this prestigious body.

The late NEVILLE DE SOUZA, originally from Assagao, has the unique distinction of scoring a hat-trick for India in the Olympics. He scored it against Australia in Melbourne in 1956 in the quarterfinals. Having secured the honours for his country, Neville left the world, almost unsung. However, his brother DERYK DE SOUZA, another international who scored a hat-trick at Merdeka against China in 1964 and is the longest surviving coach, is still living BUT is caught in a deep personal problem. His wife Rosette, a top Mumbai hockey player in her prime, is suffering from Plurosis and other problems. Deryk has exhausted all his resources for her medical treatment and would SOON know not from where to get the next paisa for his wife's treatment. (Extracted from SportsWatch-Herald).

PALOMA FAY FERNANDES, a student of Navelim's Rosary College and hailing from Gaunsavaddo in Siolim, topped at the College as she bagged the second place at the TYBC examination conducted by the Goa University. Rosary's Nazino Cardozo stood third. This is the first batch to pass through the Rosary College. In the results declared by the Goa University on June 18, TYBCom showed 89.05 per cent while TYBCA 90.16 per cents.

MARIA ELMINA D'SOUZA, a staff member of the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour, has been awarded the Friendship Forum of India Award at a function held in New Delhi recently. Maria hails from Santa Cruz.

MS CHRISTABELLE BcomES stood first in the Diploma Course in Floriculture and Landscape Gardening, securing 80 per cent marks, in the recently held examination in Agricultural Sciences. RUENA SAVIA VAZ of Damodar College of Commerce and Economics, Margao, secured the First rank at the TYBCA examination held recently.
FR LUIZ PINTO LOURENCO, the parish priest of Morjim, has made it his mission to save the lives of pythons. In the past five years, he caught as many as 50 Indian rock pythons, which had strayed into the village in search of food. The snakes were later released in their natural habitat in the forests. Whenever Fr Luiz catches a snake, he calls the villagers and the children and tells them about the harmless snakes, and he urges them to refrain from killing the reptiles.

An ornament designed by young Goan goldsmith from Panjim, MILIND SHIRODKAR, has been selected and recommended for the national award selection.

DR R WISEMAN PINTO, Associate Professor in Pathology, Goa Medical College, was recently honoured with the prestigious national award for "Excellence in Medical Teaching and Academics".

UDAY CHEPO GAUNKAR of Abhinav Vidyamandir in Mollem and Sarita Carvalho of Rosary High School in Miramar, have returned from the study tour of England, where they successfully completed their study project. The two teachers were selected by GONAS and sent to England under the Teacher Exchange Study Project.

Seventh grade student AMEYA VELINGKAR, a resident of Pennsylvannia, USA, obtained the first rank in Mathematics in the country, at a National Talent Search programme conducted by the world-renowned John Hopkins University. Nearly 90,000 students took the Scholastic Aptitude Test.

The All India Congress Committee has appointed SAVIO D'SOUZA as the PCC chairman on Comunidades. D'Souza has been advised by the PCC president to prepare a report of the problems faced by the Comunidade components, by July 15.

CUSTODIO REBELLO, a prominent Mumbai-based Goan who was the circulation manager of "Free Press Journal", a compere of repute and a veteran tiatrist, passed away on June 29, 2001, of a massive heart attack. Born on September 6, 1938, in Varca, Rebello did his education in Mumbai and joined the then Mumbai's popular weekly 'Current' after graduation. He then switched over to 'Onlooker' magazine and later was the circulation manager of 'Body & Care' magazine before taking over the charge of Free Press Journal. A devoted member of the 'Legion of Mary' Custodio was associated with the Legion for more than three decades and held different responsible positions in the Legion. A staunch supporter of Konkani and Goan causes, Rebello was the Secretary of Maharashtra Konkani Kala Sanstha and ex-chairman of the Goan Review Art Foundation.
