UNION MINISTER TAKES A BEATING

One of those injured. On the eve of Id (December 16), there was tension at Sao Pedro, midway between Panjim and Old Goa, as the Union Minister of State for Shipping and North Goa MP, Shripad Naik, was assaulted by two youngsters--Irfan Ismail Aga (28), and his younger brother Aaiyas (21), an engineer. The incident resulted into two persons being injured in the firing by Naik's personal security officer Dilip Mahato.

It must have been quite embarrassing for such a docile person as Shripad Naik to be get into such a sticky mess, and that too right in front of his house and with his wife and three kids in the car. The police version of the mishap maintains that a Yamaha motorbike, on which the two brothers were riding, skidded and the youngsters were thrown off after dashing the minister's car, while Naik was taking a turn on the main road to go home.

The Aga brothers, hailing from Sanquelim, maintain that the accident was not due to their fault. Incensed on being knocked down, they attacked the MP without even realizing who he was. PSO Mahato is said to have tried to pacify the attackers and when they would not listen, he fired warning shots in the air. When there was an attempt to snatch his revolver, PSO Mahato said that he was compelled to open fire in self-defence and to protect his boss and his family. While one bullet caught Aiyas on his shoulder the other lodged in the right leg of 18-year-old Marlinga Devdappa, who has passing by.

Miscreants set ablaze prayer hall in Socorro

Man's ire seems to have shifted its target from the homes of humans to that of the gods. Some miscreants set fire to a temporary place of prayer of the Muslim community at Porvorim. They torched about 10 copies of religious books and nearly 200 prayer matts, on the eve of Eid-Ul-Fitr (Ramzan Eid). The community elders of the 200-odd Muslim, who offer prayers at the hall, prevailed over their members and prevented any retaliatory reaction.

MGP's Upstaging Stance

The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) lion seems to stirring after a prolonged state of inconsequence. The MGP has had the mortification of getting their MLA elected, only to see them being snatched by the parties to rig up new governments. So the party's president, Shashikala Kakodkar decided to speak out, saying that the party enjoys the right to expose the wrongdoings of the BJP if any. She said that the BJP should pressurise the MGP MLAs to merge into the BJP. Ms Kakodkar is still of the view that the people don't trust national parties and their working patterns, and that the MGP would be the next option.
