JOANNE-MARIE D'MELLO
Excellent Talent
By Daniel F de Souza
SMART, confident and graceful Joanne-Marie
D'Mello, has an admirable stage presence. She possesses a fine
style, composure, voice modulation and articulate control with which
she performs. Once scarcely believe that she's just a 15-year-old
school girl. Joanne-Marie studies in Std X at Saligao's Lourdes
Convent High School and is the daughter of Joseph X. D'Mello and
Jean Mendonca e D'Mello of Sangolda.
A Mezzo-Soprano,
Joanne-Marie is a student at the Dept., of Western Music, Kala
Academy since 1998, training in voice under the guidance of Juliana
de Sa, besides learning to play the violin and the piano.
Recently at the Swarangan
programme presented by the Kala Academy, Joanne-Marie D'Mello gave
an impressive Vocal Recital at the Black Box with Jennifer Baracho
ably accompanying her on the piano. At the end of the 90-minute
performance young she received a standing ovation from a satisfied
audience.
Her repertoire included
German, French, Latin, Italian, Konkani and Portuguese for the grand
finale from composers of varied periods and styles ranging from G.F.
Handel, W.A. Mozarts, F. Schubert, A.L. Webber, Vaughan Williams
besides others. Joanne teamed up with Chernoll Mendonca to render a
befitting tribute to St Francis in 'Sam Franciscu
Xaviera'.
She had vocalised a solo
and a duet in the audio cassette "Beautiful Millennium". In
1999, she sang Handel's Recitative and Aria 'Come Gladsome
Spring' accompanied by the String Ensemble (Dept., of Western
Music) Kala Academy. In August 2001, Joanne, performed in the 'Young
Talent' concert presented by the National Centre for the Performing
Arts and The Stop-Gaps Cultural Academy at Tata Experimental
Theatre, Nariman Point, Mumbai.
In 1997 Joanne-Marie
bagged the first place at the All Goa Singing Competition at Monte
de Guirim. For three consecutive years--l998, 1999, and 2000--she
bagged the Award for Voice at the Department of Western Music. In
2000 and 2001 she was awarded the Maestro Antonio Figueiredo Prize,
and Christina D'Souza Koch Prize respectively, for the Outstanding
Student of the year for Voice. She has also bagged the Pedro
Fernandes Prize for Voice for the years 1999 and 2000. In the French
Nightingale Competition of the Alliance Francaise Goa, in 1999,
Joanne-Marie was placed second in the Junior Category.
It is already evident
that the mellifluous singer will cover herself with praise in the
particular branch of music she has chosen.
