Women in Portuguese Goa

"Women in Portuguese Goa, 1510-1835", published by Irish-Meshar in Pondicherry, is a 329-page history book authored by Sr Emma Maria AC. The book delves into the pages of the past to discover the Goan women's age-old way of life, embedded chiefly in the principles of Hinduism and Islam.

When the Portuguese, voyaging from the Iberian peninsula, came face to face with the Indian society at the turn of the sixteenth century, and established themselves firmly in Goa, particularly since 1510, they primarily viewed Goan women as their newly found consorts, to substitute their spouses back home in Portugal or even as those who could gratify their sexual needs temporarily sans any commitment.

Moreover, the Portuguese caravels found in the exotic women of the East a great source for giving vent to their pent up energy despite their familiarity with the Christian morals and code of conduct. On the other hand, the Portuguese, educated in Christian environs, held women in great respect on account of the womanhood sanctified by the incarnation of Christ.

The differential aspects of the encounter of the Portuguese with Goan women, and especially the aspirations of some of those who wanted to live a committed life for the service of God and fellow beings or those who were put in ignominious conditions, prompted the church under the Portuguese Padroado to set up institutions and invest money to look after their well being.

Sr Emma's "Women in Portuguese Goa" is rightly a pioneering effort to study the plight of women in Portuguese Goa from 1510 to 1835, based on contemporary documents preserved in various repositories. A section of the book is set apart to highlight the historical background till the advent of the Portuguese and then to study the milieu from where the Portuguese came to India. The remaining sections deal in detail with the establishment of the institutions under the Portuguese and their activities.

The epilogue points to the direction in which the activities initiated in yester years, have progressed. This could be considered a welcome study of women during the colonial period.

The author, Sr Emma Maria AC, is a perpetually committed member of the Apostolic Carmel Congregation, actively involved in the education, especially of girls. After taking Bachelor and Master's degrees in History and Political Science as well as Bachelor degree in Education, in History and English from the Bombay University, Sr Emma Maria has been fully engaged in the formation of the youth for the last 21 years. She participated in a number of national and international seminars. Her profession and her bent of mind paved the way for conducting research in the history of women in general and women in colonial Goa in particular. Currently, the author is working as the Vice Principal of Carmel College of Arts, Science and Commerce for Women, Nuvem-Goa.
