REPTILE PROTECT

GC Volunteers explain"We want to sensitize the people as to why snakes are important in the environment, and have focused on Goa for two days beginning with the Nagpanchami festival. We have a target of sensitizing 2000 students and public in the State through the snake talks," said Nirmal Kulkarni, chairman of volunteer organisation Green Cross.

Green Cross organised the programme in co-ordination with the Indian Herpetological Society, Pune, and Pune Snake Park, at the LD Samant Memorial High School in Porvorim, for the school students in the morning and the general public in the evening on August 14. Nilimkumar Khaire, the Director of the Pune Snake Park and President of the Indian Herpetological Society, participated in the two-day programme, along with Shriram Shinde, the Curator of the Park."

A large number of students saw different types of snakes from close quarters with fear and panic, and learnt how harmless and environment-friendly reptiles are. They could touch and feel the snakes without the usual revulsion for such beings.

At the Siolim Plant Festival

Green Cross volunteers leave no opportunity to come out and explain why reptile protection is necessary. Their volunteers were also present with a talk and live demonstration at the eleventh edition of the popular "Siolim Plant Festival" last month.
