ALEXYZ AWAY

Caricaturing British Celebrities at the House of Commons

Alexyz with Keith VazCartoonist Alexyz, who has been taking every one on a fantasy tour through his crazy cartoons, was himself on a month-long tour of England with a bulky portfolio full of caricatures of famous English faces and three-dimensional funscapes of Goa.

AlexyzWhile in England, Alexyz managed to score a unique record of being the first Goan to hold an exhibition at the House of Commons, at the invitation of Cabinet minister Keith Vaz. While inaugurating the exhibition titled Famous Faces at the Jubilee Room of the House of Commons, Keith paid glowing tributes to the talent of Alexyz, both as a cartoonist depicting the Goan way of life and as a caricaturist. Keith, at whose invitation Alexyz travelled to London, also thanked Tony Luis, Eddie Fernandes, Aires Rodrigues and Rene Baretto amongst others for having organised the event so perfectly.

Alexyz had the opportunity to meet former Prime Minister John Major at the House of Commons. Visitors to the exhibition included Fr Andrew Fernandes and Robert D'Souza (Asian Chaplaincy); Francisco D'Souza and Edna Moraes-DeSouza, (SCOGO); Flavio Gracias, Diogo Pinto and Darryl Remedios (Goan Association UK), Councillor Rabi Martins JP, Rene Baretto, Anthony Fernandes, Cip Fernandes, Steve Ferros, Aires Rodrigues and Milton Rodrigues among others.

In his typical asides, Alexyz remarked that he had been looking forward to make a “speech” at the House of Commons! He did it...with a Cabinet minister in the august audience. Earlier, he had exhibited his 3-D funscapes at the function held by the Siolim Union to celebrate the feast of St Anthony on June 13. On the heels of the House of Commons exhibition on June 16, Alexyz also exhibited his rare work of Goan art at the prestigious London Marriot Hotel, for the delegates of the convention on "Into Leadership: Diversity in Britain in the 21st Century". Later on he held another show at the Shell Centre, organised by Maria Barreto.

Alexyz was full of praise for the warm hospitality extended to him by Goans in England and particularly the Goa netters. Thanks to them, specially to videographer Anthony Fernandes and his wife Flora, Eddie and Lira Fernandes, Aires and Loretta Rodrigues, Jaqui and Steve Banwell, Lui and Ally Godinho, Greg Carvalho and Desmond and Havovy Fernandes, his 4-day stay was extended to four weeks.
