At the inter-institutional badminton championships held at Bangalore recently, Goa's No.1 shuttler LEENA PEDNEKAR had her opponents run all over the court with her deft smashes and timely tosses. LOUISE FERNANDES, wife of UP Congress committee chief Salman Khurshid, will fight the Lok Sabha elections from the 'family' seat of Farroukhabad. Louise says that she does not wish to sound "feudal" but takes pride in the family's work in the constituency. Louise has been a leader in her own right, having represented the Congress at various forums. She is also the project director of the Zakir Hussain Memorial Trust. She feels deeply for women, child welfare, education and environment. Having been associated with journalism, Louise vows to fight for the freedom of the press too. Whether fears about Hepatitis-B are valid or not, the vaccine for the dreaded liver disease has surely caused a scare in Goa. GAYLE D'SOUZA was a happy teenager from Saligao, studying fine arts, until she went for the vaccine for Hepatitis-B, at a camp organized by the Lion Club on July 22. After vaccination, Gayle felt giddy. Her arm turned blue and swollen, and soon the hand went limp. A lump formed on her right hand, where she was hurriedly given the vaccine. Her panicked parents-Vimla and Ton 'Rex'--took her to prominent neurologist, Dr Chico J Vaz, who diagnosed Gayle's case as brachial neuritis with severe pain. Meanwhile, the representatives of the Hyderabad-based firm, Shantha Biotechnis (P) Ltd, distributing the vaccine, cannot be traced. On the other hand, Dr Anand Naik, deputy director of the Health department says that vaccines are not bad for health. But he virtually wonders whether the vaccines were required on the scale as being done in the Hepatitis-B case. Nearly 40 such vaccination camps have been held so far at places like Assolna, Vasco, Quepem, Margao, Saligao, Assagao, Anjuna, Panjim, Cuncolim, Mapusa and Candolim, and in Vasco nearly 4,500 persons were vaccinated. The Lions Club organising the camps charged up to Rs.180 per adult dose ( at a "subsidized rate") while it is said that all the three doses should cost just about Rs.350. One does not know who is fooling whom: the organizers of the Hepatitis-B vaccine, the government who raised such a hue and cry making people pay so much to be vaccinated, or persons who vaccinated people without taking sufficient care? The vaccines too could be spurious. Will the manufacturing company should come out with a clarification? One only hopes that there aren't any more cases like Gayle's, a girl suffering for some one's folly or hurry to make some more money.
