Panjim: The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Monday disposed of a PIL filed by Gourav Jaiswal and NGO Goa Foundation challenging the privatisation of a public park by Shalom Housing Society after taking detailed steps to ensure it was restored to the public.
The petitioners had approached the High Court after the park adjacent to Miramar beach had been closed with a gate and alleged that a fence round the park with the name ‘Shalom’ painted on it gave outsiders the impression that the park belong to the housing society.
“Additionally, the private security guards of the society often accosted people who had wandered into the park and attempted to dissuade them from staying in it,” the petitioners submitted during the hearing before the division bench comprising N M Jamdar and Prithviraj K Chavan.
On the other hand, Shalom lawyers told the court that they had spent a lot of money on beautifying the protecting the park; and the gate was to prevent stray cows from entering the garden and damaging the plants. [H]
