Panjim: Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Tuesday apologised to a patient and family after Goa Medical College’s (GMC) blatant violation of confidentiality over the status of an HIV patient was revealed. GMC had also affixed a ‘Universal Precaution’ board on the patient’s bed, causing much distress to the family.
“My sincere apologies to the patient and his family for going through an act of discrimination in GMC by the staff; the Dean and Health Secretary have taken strict action against this. We ensure that such situations will not happen in the future,” Rane said.
The board was removed after non-governmental organisation, Human Touch, working to end discrimination and provide care and support to people living with HIV, raised the issue with the hospital authorities and with Rane.
Goa Medical College Dean Dr Pradeep Naik also said that circulars were issued in the past asking staff to avoid any such terminology. [H]
