Home guards, civil defence can play vital role on road safety awareness: DGP

Panaji: Home guards and civil defence can play an important role in creating awareness of not only road safety but also safety to the entire society at large, said Dr Muktesh Chander, Director General of Police.

Dr Chander was speaking as the chief guest at the Annual Raising day function of home guards and civil defence organisation held at police headquarters, Panaji on Thursday.

Dr Chander congratulated the home guards and civil defence for their excellent work. Dr Chander further said that in order to maintain communal harmony, civil defence has always been playing an important role. Dr Chander appealed to the home guard volunteers to participate in the traffic sentinel scheme and also follow traffic rules.

Addressing the gathering, Dinraj Govekar, deputy commandant general of home guards and civil defence briefed about the history and role played by home guards and civil defence. He informed that home guards and civil defence organisation has been providing valuable assistance to the local police in maintaining law and order, traffic regulation, VIP security duties. Every year home guards are specially deployed to assist police during Christmas and New Year celebrations, he added.

Govekar congratulated Radhika Halarnkar, Honorary Sergeant (HG) and Uday Nagappa Kuri, civil defence volunteer who has been awarded the President’s Home Guards and Civil Defence Medal for their meritorious service on the occasion of Independence Day 2018.

Also present on the occasion were Jaspal Singh, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Parmaditya, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG). Shekhar Prabhudesai, SP head quarters among others. [NT]
