Illegal sand mining in Chinchinim on since 2013

Margao: Illegal sand mining has been going on along the tributary of the River Sal in between Kankamodi and Durga ward of Chinhinim village. Google earth images show that the activity has been going on since 2013. Sources in the Panchayat claim that they are aware of the activity however no one has filed a complaint. There is no permission issued by the Directorate of Mines neither has any Environment clearance been granted for the activity.
The site where the activity is going on is more than a kilometer away from the village road. The sand that is illegally mined from the river is dumped on land which is hidden behind thick vegetation. Locals claim that one or two trucks move in and out of the site at night.Herald visited the site and found two heaps of sand stacked at the site. There was a boat in the river with three men in it who were extracting the sand from the river bed. They travel to the site on cycles to avoid detection. Apparently, no one has complained against the illegal activity neither has it been raised in the gramsabha since the site is remotely located and there are less than a dozen houses along the road.
