K’taka-Goa water war intensifies
BANGALORE: The Centre’s delay in taking a final decision on the Kalasa-Banduri Nala water project has forced Karnataka to go ahead with it, with or without Central nod. The state will start work on the project on October 2. However, political observers feel the Centre should immediately intervene in the matter to avoid unnecessary tension in the Karnataka-Goa border region. Karnataka had designed the project in 2000 to divert 7.56 tmc of water from Kalasa and Banduri tributaries of Mahadayi river to Malaprabha reservoir to meet drinking water needs in northern Karnataka. The river originates in Karnataka and passes through Maharasthra and Goa and finally flows into the Arabian Sea. Meanwhile, Goa has requested the Prime Minister to restrain Karnataka from proceeding. If Karnataka is not restrained, Goa may approach the apex court seeking directions for staying the project and the setting up of a tribunal. (Jaishankar Jayramiah, The Financial Express)

Achievements of the Last Decade
When I began writing (this column) in August 1996, there was a newly elected government in Goa. The second state legislative assembly had ambitious, scheming and manipulating politicians and little did we anticipate about the future destabilising political events. The government under Mr Pratapsing Rane was performing well but had to face a spirited combined opposition from BJP and MGP. The political equations changed drastically in 1998 and the nadir was reached when the assembly was dissolved, prematurely in February 2002. The BJP hijacked the advantage of the MGP. The 15-year-old Gomant Lok Paksha finally got dissolved. The political vacuum was filled by a resuscitated UGDP. The emergence of Goa Rajiv Congress and later the NCP complicated the political calculus. The electoral base of Congress party has never weakened but its failure to enter into seat adjustments with NCP and UGDP proved a boon to the BJP. (Nandkumar Kamat, NT-Glimpses)

The Top 3 states in each category are Labour Demand ( Gujarat, Goa and Himachal Pradesh), Labour Supply (Goa, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu) and Labour Laws ( Maharashtra, Karnataka and Punjab). In Vasco, among the oldest electronic shops, Preeti Electronics has completed almost 25 years of existence. It was in 1982 that the Asian Games were being held in New Delhi.
