WARNS FOREIGNERS BUYING PROPERTIES
PANJIM: Taking serious note of foreigners buying immovable
properties in the state, Chief Minister Pratapsing Rane,
on June 1, warned that the government would acquire such
properties. It is learnt that Rane gave this warning at
a high-level meeting attended by Chief Secretary JP Singh
and other officers.
The government took serious note of the sub-registrars registering
sale deeds submitted by foreigners buying immovable properties,
without verifying their documents and in contravention of
the Foreigners Exchange Management Act, 1999.
Meanwhile, the Home department has been already asked to
verify whether sale deeds were registered without checking
the documents submitted by the foreigners. (GT)

BOLT HITS IMO FROM THE BLUE
PANJIM: Goa has been flooded with almost 18 inches of rainfall,
faced a nasty squall and seen vessels sinking or grounding
off the coast. The rains were dubbed as 'pre-monsoon' showers
by the Indian Meteorological Observatory, the premature
monsoon hit the IMO like a bolt from the blue. The rains
hit Goa on may 26. "Pre-monsoon showers," said
the IMO. Next day, the IMO said, "So far, the monsoon
has not set into Goa. It has just hit Kerala and it takes
about a week for it to actually reach Goa." However,
on May 29, the IMO realised the truth and announced that
Goa had indeed experienced monsoon showers from May 28.
The next day IMO issued a warning that squally weather may
hit the state late in the evening. But the warning reached

threatens to wash away Salcete's coastline
MARGAO, June 1: There's finally respite from the cyclonic
winds and heavy rains, but the spectre of soil erosion is
looming over Salcete's coastal belt with the arrival of
the monsoon. Salcete's coastline along Betalbatim, Majorda
and other areas have come under strain,with the coast being
hit by huge waves coupled with rough weather conditions.
Says a fishermen, "Last year, Majorda witnessed erosion
along the beach due to rising sea levels. This year may
not be an exception." (H)

restored in most areas in South Goa: Kamat
MARGAO: The Electricity department has suffered a loss of
Rs.2 crore and most of the restoration work had been completed,
divulged Power Minister Digambar Kamat yesterday. (GT)
Oil
spill moves towards Goa
PANJIM: Oil spilled from the merchant navy vessel, "MV
Ocean Seraya", lying off Karwar coast in Arabian Sea,
has spread to Deobag coast in Karnataka and the spill is
moving towards Goa even as Coast Guard battled rough weather
and poor visibility to tackle the problem, officials said.

Thieves
attempt to rob bungalow at Mapusa
MAPUSA: Unidentified thieves removed the
ventilator of the bungalow of Chandramohan Nasnodkar,
a goldsmith residing in Dangui Colony, Duler, and attempted
to burgle his house. The police could not get the information
about the property from the house as the Nasnodkar family
has been on a world tour. (GT)
Power
cables on beaches may go underground
MARGAO, June 1: Taking into account the damage caused
by cyclonic winds to power lines, the State government
is likely to ask the Union Government for a grant of Rs.60
crore to lay underground power cables along the coastal
belt of North and South Goa. (H)
Fishing
ban from June 10
PANJIM,
June 1: The Government today announced the ban on all
marine fishing activities in the state with effect from
June 10 in a bid to allow rejuvenation of fish resources
in the sea. Generally, it is expected to be in force for
two months to allow spawning of fish. (H)

JOSE PEREIRA HONOURED
MARGAO:
"The mother tongue is an important part of our culture
and Dr Jose Pereira has made valuable contribution to culture
through his research and writings about Konkani," said
Rev Francis de Britto presiding over the function arranged
to present Dr Kashinath Mahale Asmitai Award at Margao on
May 27. Fr de Brito hailed the contribution of Jose Pereira
to the study of theology and said that it is a matter of
pride for all Goans that scholars of theology and Indology
have opined that Dr Pereira has been able to present tenets
of Hinduism in a way, which is better than that of Dr S
Radharkishnan. Dr Jose Pereira spoke about the Konkani folklore
of Kerala reciting some of the folksongs. He emphasized
that through the folklore Kerala Konkanis have preserved

GEARS UP TO TACKLE VECTOR BORNE DISEASE
PANJIM:
The state government has geared up its machinery for control of
vector borne diseases during monsoon. Malaria, lymphatic, filariasis,
Japanese Encephalitis and dengue fever were vector borne diseases
found prevalent in Goa. Among them, Malaria was the main concern

The Economic Offences cell has brought a director
- Kundanlal Dave - of the controversial Venus Life Marketing Ltd
on a transfer warrant from Ahmedabad on June 1 in connection with
the case where thousands of Goan investors were duped of a total

Trains
on KRC route affected due to incessant rains
MARGAO, June 1: The incessant rains that lashed the Konkan
region during the last three days resulting in as much as 614
mm rainfall in the Ratnagiri region has affected rail traffic
and even the road communication seriously. Movement on the Konkan
Railway route was severely affected throughout the day with several
trains running late owing to flooding of track reported at 3 locations.

Marathi scholars team up to honour writer
PANJIM, June 1: For the first time in the history of Sahitya
Akademi, conveners of Konkani and Marathi seminars jointly
organised a seminar on 'The Contribution of Laxmanrao
Sadesai' to Konkani and Marathi literature. A renowned
short story writer, Laxmanrao Sardesai has nearly 13 collections
of short stories in Marathi to his credit. He has written
four books in Konkani of which "Khobro: Kaim
Karmacheo, Kaim Vormacheo" won him the prestigious
Sahitya Akademi award. A proponent of Konkani, Laxmanrao
Sardesai has remained a source of inspiration to the younger

FILM 'JUST A MINUTE' RELEASED
MARGAO: The VCD of short Konkani
film 'Just a Minute' was released at the Gomant Vidhya
Niketan, Margao, by Art and Culture Minister Digamber
Kamat, recently. The 74-minute film, produced by Machi
Mogi, Santa Cruz, in association with VP Sinari and Sons,
is based on the award sinning script of Konkani tiatr
'Ahvaan' by Menino Mario Araujo. 'Just a Minute' is a
film full of suspense. The screenplay is by Dnyanesh Moghe,
who has also directed the film, besides handling the photography

Ernest Braganza excelled in every
area of football. He had the best control over
the ball, could initiate the fastest moves
and centred the ball
accurately to his colleagues.
Ernest spent his childhood in the small village
of Chorao. "In the year 1964, I joined the league
team called Viriatos da Ponda. Years later he joined Sesa
Goa as a left winger. He was selected for the state team
in 1969 and then for the India camp in 1971 and 1972,"
Ernest says. He stopped playing professionally in 1976,
as he thought of migrating to the Gulf for better prospects,
