IMPROPER TIME FRAME DELAYS PURCHASE OF LAND BY MUNDKARS
PANJIM: The state government might have put the issue of the rights of thousands of Goa's mundkars back on the rail but its failure to work out a time frame for the purchase of the land from landowners is likely to drag on for some more time. The government came to the rescue of the mundkars by bringing a new Act after the Bombay High Court at Goa by an order dated December 16, 2003, in the wake of a writ petition filed by Dr Vassudeo Deshprabhu of Pernem in 1987 against the Goa government and others, praying that the mundkars be asked to purchase the land at the prevailing market value since the Act was not assented by the President. MODERN COMUNIDADE SYSTEM NEEDED
The recent amendment by government to acquire land without any restrictions and without the formality of auction is yet another modus-operandi by government to deprive Comunidade bodies of their rightful revenue of prevailing market land prices. It is also an attempt by politicians to make quick money at the cost of the Comunidade...If Government is keen to improve the functioning of Comunidades, then it can very well issue an ordinance for a complete overhaul of the code of Comunidade and enact a new law to bring Comunidade on similar lines of functioning to that of a Limited Company government under provisions of the Company Act 1956. PROTECTING OUT ENDANGERED SPECIES
The government of Goa, the wild life lovers in the state and the nature loving Chief Minister of Goa, Mr Rane, need to take note that the apex body of the UN in the world for conservation of nature and natural resources - the IUCN - has put the species Panthera pardus, the 'bibto' of Goa in the 2004 red list of threatened species. This casts a special responsibility on the government to spend any amount of money to save the last few members of this species in Goa. But it looks like the panther would just remain as a poster animal in the public memory. (Nandkumar Kamat, NT)

PARAS MHAMBREY IS GOAN
I don't think it is correct to say Dilip Sardesai is the only Goan cricketer to play international cricket as reported in sections of the press. He is perhaps the only 'Goa born' Goan cricketer to play for India. Mumbai-based Paras Laxmikant Mhambrey (Mumbai) is another Goan cricketer to achieve this feat. I don't know whether he was born in Goa but he is a 'Mumbaikar Goan' who visits Corjuem (Aldona) once a year during Ganesh Chaturthi. He played 2 tests and 3 one-day matches and also 91 first class matches, capturing 284 wickets. Some say Pandurang Mahadev Salgaonkar is of Goan origin too. He was born in 1949 at Malvan. He was one of the fastest bowlers India has ever produced. He is the only bowler to have inflicted injury on Sunil Gavasksar with a bouncer. By the way, Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar have their kuldevs (ancestral deities) in Goa at Ramnathi and Mulgao respectively. (Mahesh Divekar, Bicholim, in Letters to the Editor, GT)
