YOLANDA'S PAINTING AUCTIONED IN NETHERLANDS
YolandaCALANGUTE, Feb 3: “Devil in Man”, a painting by Goa’s renowned artist Yolanda D’Souza, was auctioned at Haque Auction House in Netherlands on February 1, according to a message received by her today from an art lover – Bart - in that country. The beautiful painting, along with the creative work of several other contemporary artists, had earlier been auctioned at Fort Aguada Beach Resort, Sinquerim-Goa, to raise funds for the earthquake victims in Gujarat. Thereafter none of the artists had heard anything about the paintings, until Yolanda received an email message from Bart, who located her email id by accessing the internet. Yolanda disclosed the information to us at her Galeria & Studio, in Calangute, at the inauguration of "Sacrifice" and exhibition of the paintings of Goan Sonia Rodrigues Sabharwal. (GoaNewsClips)

Sonia's Superb "Sacrifice" Series paintings
CALANGUTE, Feb 3: After her popular "Meditation" series, artist Sonia Rodrigues Sabharwal says that the easiest topic to tackle was "Sacrifice", depicting the 14 "stations of the cross".
The spiritual series in which Sonia paints Jesus in green colour, symbolising never-ending growth, was inaugurated by Pedro Adao, Consul for Portugal, at Yolanda's Galeria & Studio at Gauravaddo in Calangute this evening and will remain on show till February 28. Sonia Rodrigues Sabharwal completed her studies at the Goa College of Art and had a residency in Portugal and earned a research grant from Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi. She was also nominated for UNESCO Award in Painting by the Kala
Akademy, Goa. Several of the cheerful and talented artist's aesthetic paintings grace private collections in India and overseas. (GoaNewsClips)

Subodh KerkarKerkar's installations travel to South Korea
Goa-based artist, Dr Subodh Kerkar, is all set to captivate the people in South Korea. Installation artist Dr Subodh Kerkar is among 20 artists from all over the world who have been selected to participate in the Busan Biennale Sea Art Festival in South Korea. He is the only artist who will be representing India at the festival. (GT)

'Dabolim airport is lifeline'
Talking about the incident where taxi drivers gheraoed Education Minister Luizinho Faleiro at Varca, the minister said that he would see to it that Dabolim airport continues to be the international airport. 'Phase out ban on plastic bags'
PANJIM: Goa Small Industries Association (GSIA) has stated that a sudden ban on plastic carry bags will affect more than 80 units with crore of rupees in investment and 1,200 families. Making a case for phasing out the ban, the GSIA stated that the decision would be harsh on 30 plastic units and more than 59 plastic extrusion units and urged the government, NGOs and other bodies to work out a proper schedule. The statement comes in the wake of banning of plastic bags by Mormugao Municipal Council and proposals for a similar decision in Panjim. (GT)

Salary scale revision for teachers soon: Luizinho
PANJIM: If the Education Minister Luizinho Faleiro is to be believed, then the working conditions of the teacher will improve soon and there may also be a salary scale revision. Still better, it has been decided to decentralise and rationalise the functioning of the Education department to ensure quick work. (GT)

Cong govt blamed for breakdown in law and order
MAPUSA:The former chief minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday asserted that there has been a total breakdown in the law and order situation in the State under the Congress rule. Speaking at a public meeting at the taxi stand here, to mark the first anniversary of the ouster of his BJP-led government, Parrikar claimed that goons, thieves and robbers have gained an upper hand with the law enforcing agencies exhibiting their sheer inefficiency in curbing and detecting crimes. He said that during the last 8 months there have been 48 murders, 23 rapes, 20 kidnappings besides 15 cases of burglaries where chapels and churches have been targetted. Further he disclosed that several places of worship including crosses and temples have been desecrated in order to create communal rift in Goa. (GT)

MARGAO: Going by recent incidents, Goa needs more cops on the beach than beach guards. Three reported incidents, two of them from the remote Zalor beach are only an indication of crime on South Goa's beaches. (GT)

Cabinet nod for metered cabs, new fares
PANJIM: Transport Minister Pandurang Madkaikar yesterday said that the Cabinet had approved a proposal to increase the fare of yellow and black taxis, tourist taxis and autorickshaws in the state and to install electronic meters within 45 days. A notification to this effect would be issued within the next couple of days. Madkaikar said that the government would grant 25 per cent subsidy to the operators to install meters duly approved by the Government of India.(GT)

Sada, Mapusa jails go hi-tech
PANJIM, Feb 3: Two months from now, undertrials from sub-jail at Sada and the judicial lock-up at Mapusa will be linked to District and Sessions Courts for deposing and evidence recording through videoconferencing. The introduction of the hi-tech systems are in pursuance of directives from the High Court in an interim order passed recently. The DG Prisons pointed out that the facility will reduce the cost of transporting the undertrials to courts and also reduce the time consuming exercise of providing police escorts, etc. (H)

148 dog bites...and only 30 vaccines
MARGAO, Feb 3: The rising incidence of dog bites in and around Margao has not spurred the health authorities to make the anti-rabies drugs easily accessible to the victims. On the contrary, dog bite victims are left high and dry for want of anti-rabies vaccines as the supply has totally failed to keep pace with the huge requirement. (H)

MANGUESHI: The annual festival of Shri Manguesh Devasthan will be celebrated from today, February 4, to 12. A number of religious rites such as Abhishek Laghurudra, Ekadashni and Maharaudra will be performed during the festival period. Goan women at greater risk of breast cancer, says study
PANAJI, Feb 3: The fast changing lifestyle among young women in the state is directly responsible for increase in women-related cancer cases such as breast cancer and cervical cancer, according to a study. The study entitled 'Women and Cancer Prevention' presented at a lecture jointly organised by the Indian Medical Association, Bicholim, and the Rotary Club of Panaji Midtown, pointed out at least 250 women in the state were found to be suffering from cancer annually, in a total of six lakh female population. Though the figure may look small, one should note that it is highest as compared to other regions of the country, the study said. Goan women in the age group of 25 and 45 years can be placed in a crucial period. "The pattern of living condition of a Goan girl with factors like her growth, marriage and pregnancy is no longer what it used to be," Dr Shekhar Salkar observed, adding "this is probably resulted in many new cases of cancer in young women". Art therapy workshop
PANJIM: Sangath organised an Art Therapy workshop at Fundacao Oriented conducted by Dr Jawant Guzder, a Child Psychiatrist and Art Therapist from McGill University, Canada, recently. The workshop dealt with the difference between art and art therapy and how the latter can be used to effectively help children and families with special needs. (H)

Panchayats to be computerised soon, says Shirodkar
PANAJI, Feb 3: The Minister for Panchayati Raj, mr Subhash Shridokar, has said that the government intends to make panchayats more vibrant by strengthening panchayat administration and therefore the process of computerising panchayats would be initiated by March-end. (NT)

Judiciary's response to sex tourism
In recent yeas, the growth of tourism in Goa has had an adverse effect on the child population living along the coastal areas. The children targetted are generally the migrants, the street children, those from broken homes, working in shacks, hotels and restaurants. The problem of sex tourism in Goa was first highlighted when Freddy Peat, a German national who ran an orphanage in Goa, was arrested at the behest of a Bombay-based journalist, Sheela Bharse. He was later convicted for life on charges of having supplied several children through the orphanage run by him to people of British, French, German, Swiss and Scandinavian nationalities. Power to panchayats
The panchayati raj in Goa needs to be streamlined and strengthened to become a meaningful and effective institution in the benefit delivery mechanism. The state government had come out with the proposal to promulgate an ordinance sometime in October 2005 to make the functioning of the panchayats more transparent and to provide more powers to the sarpanchas While the ordinance is yet to take shape the government has come out with a fresh proposal to amend the Goa Gram Samruddhi Yojana for allotting more funds and empowering village panchayats. City shop burgled
PANJIM: In a baffling burglary, valuables including mobile handsets and wrist-watches worth Rs.2.15 lakh were stolen from a shop opposite Hotel Delmon at the Panjim market during the intervening hours of Thursday night and Friday morning. What is baffling about this burglary at 'Lucky Stop' shop, owned by Harish Melvani, is that the locks on the shutters were intact as left the previous night. The shop is just a lane away from the Panjim police station. (GT)

FRANSA NO-SHOW GROUNDS MATCH
MARGAO: It was a no-show at Fatorda stadium. Air India turned up at the Nehru stadium, Fatorda, while there was no sign of Fransa Pax Football Club, as the NFL match between the two turned out to be a non-starter here yesterday. Fransa Pax Football Club boss Francisco (Mickky) Pacheco is hell bent on refusing to play the remainder of the National Football League matches till the verdict of the matches involving the club will be a no-show as the clubs awaits "justice" from AIFF end.
